ST. GEORGE — Utahns applying for health insurance on healthcare.gov now have until 3 a.m. EST/12 a.m. PST Thursday to sign up for coverage that starts Jan. 1, 2016. Free assistance is available statewide through the nonprofit enrollment network Take Care Utah, reachable online or by calling 211.
This is a two-day extension beyond Tuesday’s original deadline.
If a consumer signs up before the Dec. 17 deadline, their insurance coverage will begin or continue (if re-enrolling) Jan. 1, 2016, the earliest date possible.
As of Dec. 12, more than 80,887 Uthans had selected a plan on Utah’s insurance marketplace. Nationally, more than 4 million Americans made plan selections by the same date, with 36 percent of them being new consumers.
Sixty five percent of Utahns applying for insurance on healthcare.gov receive subsidies that reduce their monthly premium costs, and seven out of ten consumers can find a plan for $75 or less in monthly premiums after tax assistance.
The nonprofit agencies affiliated with Take Care Utah are standing by to help Utahns with their health insurance questions. All services are confidential and free of charge.

Two Obamacare failures unwittingly described in one article. First, a deadline is extended by administrative fiat in violation of the law; over forty of those so far and counting. Second, the vast majority of those signing up are those receiving taxpayer-funded subsidies. Who’s not signing up? The younger, healthier people who recognize that their premiums would be way too high for their condition. They are supposed to be subsidizing the folks getting subsidies but aren’t falling into the trap. Result: Obamacare is NOT lowering health care costs but increasing them.

There is nothing “affordable” about the “Affordable Care Act”, and it provides very little “care”, especially since the majority of the exchanges have all failed financially (which is exactly what conservatives said would happen). It has caused the cost of healthcare to skyrocket, caused some hospitals to go out of business, made life much harder for doctors, created mountains of paperwork and fraud, and virtually guaranteed we end up with socialized medicine (“single payer healthcare”), which is exactly why it was created: to fail. Collectively America is too stupid to prosper anymore. And now conservatives are making the exact same mistake with Trump. Awesome. RIP commonsense.

A few years ago my brother receieved a $500,000 hospital bill because he fell off a cliff and had to be life flighted to Las Vegas The flight alone was $120,000 (if the 250 mile trip was $120,000 you can imagine how much the parents of that girl in the paper are going to get stuck with). He spent two days in the hospital. The fact that the parents of that 14 year old girl in the paper the other day have to ask others for donations because they know they won’t be able cover a hospital bill that I’m sure will be in the MILLIONS (if not tens of millions) by the time all is said and done quite frankly DISGUSTS ME! The fact that Republicans like you don’t seem to want to change that or do anything about it also DISGUSTS ME! Tell me Brian, what is the Republican answer to Obamacare? Oh that’s right! Mitt Romney passed the law Obamacare was modeled after when he was governor of Massachusetts then had the gall to say that he didn’t like it, that he didn’t think it was a good law when he was running for President! He even told Piers Morgan the following: “If I’m President I will repeal Obamacare and frankly on the first day of my administration I’ll direct the Secretary of Health and Human Services to grant a waiver to all 50 states from Obamacare”. If he didn’t think it was a good law, why did he pass it in Massachusetts?

Conservatives DO want to do something about catastrophic illness and accidents but they want to do it without taking over the entire healthcare industry. Democrats and the country would be much better off today if they had enacted some form of government-provided catastrophic insurance that would have nicely addressed your concerns. Couple that with a government-backed high risk insurance pool for folks with pre-existing conditions and the country would have loved Obama and the Democrats.
Instead Obamacare was and is an abomination, hated by the public and it’s nothing more than liberals first step toward a single payer (i.e. government run) healthcare system. If you like how the VA treats veterans, you’d love the liberals’ single payer system.
Opposing Obamacare is not opposing other more effective and far less costly approaches.

Thanks for the response. I agee with you that Obamacare is a crappy law that needs to be improved on asap but in my opinion it is a far cry better then what we had previously. I think you may have misinterpreted what I said as well, I never said that opposition to Obamacare is opposition to other approaches. I only said that Republicans have had almost 8 years now to come up with a better solution and, other then some ramblings about “Romney Care” during the 2012 election, they have done nothing about it except whine about it, lie about it and try to get it repealed without replacing it with something other then what we had before. Luckily, they have failed and hopefully they will continue to do so until they can come up with something better.
