ENOCH CITY — One Cedar City man was taken to the local hospital and another airlifted to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George after they were involved in an accident with a semitractor-trailer on Midvalley Road and Minersville Highway in Enoch Wednesday evening.

Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Bambi Gross said a 46-year-old driver and a 28-year-old passenger were in a Mazda pickup truck traveling eastbound on Midvalley Road around 5:30 p.m. when they reportedly went through the stop sign and were hit by a semi headed southbound on Minersville Highway.

The driver of the pickup, who said he was traveling the legal speed limit of 35 miles per hour, told authorities he had tried to make a stop before crossing the highway, but for some reason “slid right through;” however, witnesses said otherwise, Gross said.

“There were witnesses who said he did not stop or try to stop but ran right through the stop sign,” she said.

The 65-year-old semi driver, from Las Vegas, Nevada, said he saw the pickup truck crossing the highway, at which time he slowed down but was unable to stop. Gross said the semi driver did, however, swerve to avoid hitting the front of the pickup truck.

“He tried to stop but he couldn’t, so he swerved trying not to hit him,” she said.

Both the occupants in the truck were initially transported to Cedar City Hospital, formerly known as Valley View Medical Center, but the passenger was later airlifted to St. George for treatment of a broken neck. The driver sustained a broken clavicle on his left side, Gross said.

The driver of the truck was cited for failure to stop and having no driver’s license. Gross said there were no indications alcohol or drugs were a factor.

Enoch City Police Department and the Iron County Sheriff’s Office both assisted UHP on the scene.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
