CEDAR CITY — The preliminary hearing for a woman arrested Dec. 7 on a long list of charges she incurred while passing Parowan on Interstate 15 was rescheduled Wednesday to Jan. 20 to give time for newly appointed defense attorney James M. Park to study the case.

Following a traffic stop for speed regulations on Dec. 7, 24-year-old Jessica Carol Gleave was arrested on three warrants for failure to appear issued outside of Iron County and an additional seven charges related to the traffic stop itself, according to a probable cause statement in support of her arrest.

Gleave was pulled over when a Parowan police officer clocked her speed at 92 mph with his radar while observing traffic, the statement stated.

“When I made contact with her I could smell a strong odor of both fresh and burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle,” the officer reported in the statement.

A search of Gleave’s vehicle yielded multiple glass pipes and a metal container with marijuana in it. The officer also found a deposit bag from Pier 1 Imports in Orem containing a deposit slip for more than $2,000 in both cash and checks.

A phone call to the Pier 1 Imports store manager in Orem confirmed that Gleave was not an employee of the store and should not have had any access to the deposit bag found in her possession.

While running a background check on Gleave, the officer swore in his statement, he found that the Utah driver’s license she presented as identification had been suspended for failure to appear in court on previous charges from outside of Iron County.

At the time, Gleave was an Orem resident who told police she was in the process of moving to La Jolla, California, Parowan Police Chief Ken Carpenter said.

Gleave was also found with another person’s ID in her vehicle, Carpenter said. Though she did not attempt to use it to identify herself with police, he said, it is illegal to possess another person’s identification.

Gleave was arrested for the three outstanding warrants and also charged with theft, a third-degree felony; possession of another person’s identifying document, a class A misdemeanor; speeding, a class C misdemeanor and four class B misdemeanors for DUI metabolite, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia and driving with a suspended license.

Gleave was bailed out of the Iron County Jail Dec. 8 on $7,500 bond after declining counsel in Iron County’s 5th District Court before Judge Keith C. Barnes.

The preliminary hearing that was originally scheduled for Wednesday morning was continued to Jan. 20, 2016, at 9:30 a.m. in the District Court Building, 40 N. 100 West, Cedar City.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
