ST. GEORGE – Two people were transported to the hospital Thursday night following a rear-end collision on Riverside Drive.
Around 6:20 p.m., the St. George Communications Center received reports of a two-vehicle accident on Riverside Drive in the area of 900 South, on the east side of Foremaster Ridge.
Prior to the accident, a southbound white 2002 Ford F-150 driven by a woman in her mid-40s began to slow on Riverside Drive and had a left turn signal on with the intent of making a U-turn, St. George Police Officer Lona Trombley said. A U-turn on that part of the roadway is legal, she said.
As the Ford slowed, the vehicle behind it, a gray 1990 Honda Accord driven by a woman in her mid-20s, rear-ended the truck.
“The driver of the Honda said she looked away from the road briefly,” Trombley said. “She didn’t see the Ford slow down and ran right into the rear end (of the truck).”
The force of the impact pushed the front of the Honda underneath the rear axle of the Ford, St. George Police Sgt. Rich Triplett said. There was heavy damage to both vehicles.
The driver of the Honda and a passenger were reported to be bleeding at the scene with possible broken bones. They were taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George by Gold Cross Ambulance.
Trombley could not confirm that any injuries were sustained by the driver or passenger of the Ford. However, neither were taken to the hospital by ambulance, she said.
The driver of the Honda Accord was cited for following too closely.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
