ST. GEORGE —The Washington County Bomb Squad responded to a report of blasting materials found underground in the Indian Hills area on Saturday.

Just after 5 p.m. dispatch received a call reporting that explosive materials and/or wires were discovered underground during a digging operation in the area of Indian Hills in St. George.  Police and emergency personnel responded to the area initially, followed by the Washington County Bomb Squad who conducted an investigation of what appeared to be wires and blasting materials partially buried, St. George Fire Department Battalion Chief Darren Imlay said.

Three members of the Bomb Squad began investigating the reported materials, and after inspecting the area and suspicious debris determined it was only left-over blasting material from a previous excavation or other type of operation, Imlay said.

Excavations and landscaping operations sometimes use explosives to move a large area of earth quickly, or to blast through rock, Imlay said. This blasting material consisted of wires and other components, but upon inspection of the area it was determined that the material was buried and required a detonator to cause any danger, he said.

The Indian Hills area was partially closed off while The Washington County Bomb Squad conducted their investigation, and reopened once the all-clear was issued and the area deemed safe.  No injuries were reported, Imlay said.

The St. George Police Department, St. George Fire Department, and the Washington County Bomb Squad responded to the incident.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
