ST. GEORGE — Two St. George companies, Superior Threads and Southern Utah Eye Care, were honored as Top Businesses at the Zions Bank “Speaking on Business” luncheon Friday. They were among 15 companies recognized by Zions Bank President and CEO Scott Anderson for their examples of entrepreneurship in Utah.
“Small businesses are integral to the engine that powers our state economy,” Anderson said. “Zions Bank is committed to supporting the entrepreneurial spirit that leads to job creation and enriches our communities.”
Superior Threads
Superior Threads was started in Bob and Heather Purcell’s garage in 1998, building on Heather Purcell’s passion for using only the best quality products in her quilts.
The company has grown to 50 employees and features a catalog of more than 6,000 items with a focus on high-quality threads. Their lines of threads all have themes — such as Australian, Italian and Japanese — and they also have unique threads that change colors every inch and threads that glow in the dark.
Southern Utah Eye Care
Southern Utah Eye Care was founded 27 years ago and is owned by Dr. Kent Albrecht and Dr. Russell Miller. Southern Utah Eye Care offers primary eye care for adults and children.
One of the main concerns the practitioners have for their patients is digital eye strain, which is becoming widespread as people are spending more time in front of electronic devices.
Active in humanitarian care, both doctors provide services overseas by examining eyes and donating glasses to patients in Mexico, Guatemala and China.
Selection
Chris Redgrave, host of the KDXU 890 AM radio program “Speaking on Business,” said there were several criteria used to assist them in making their decision.
“We commend businesses like Superior Threads and Southern Utah Eye Care for their innovation, commitment to customer satisfaction and using best business practices,” Redgrave said.
Since 1997, “Speaking on Business” has highlighted more than 4,000 diverse businesses throughout Idaho and Utah. The show, which airs Monday through Friday between 7 and 8 a.m. and 5 and 6 p.m., features a wide variety of businesses. Other award winners for 2015 include those in industries such as outdoor outfitting, online job training, food and retail, language translation and construction.
