Registration open: ‘5K UFO Fun Run’ fundraiser for Southern Utah Space Foundation

CEDAR CITY— The Southern Utah Space Foundation is putting on a 5-kilometer fun run in April for runners, walkers and space enthusiasts of all ages.

The 5K Fun Run will take place April 23 at 10 a.m. from the baseball fields at Veterans Park in Cedar City, winding up the Coal Creek Trail into the gorgeous Cedar mountains.

Costumes are encouraged. Along with fastest runners, the best dressed aliens will receive prizes. Those interested can visit the UFO 5K Fun Run website to register for the race at $10 per person.

Kids are encouraged to participate and should have an accompanying adult. The trail is paved and very well marked, however it’s easy for kids to wander off into the trees if they get curious.

The space foundation is dedicated to astronomy education and outreach in the local community and for the millions of tourists that come to see the Southern Utah region’s national parks every year. Southern Utah is a prime astronomy location and the foundation provides professional level astronomy equipment to the public free of charge.

The ultimate goal of the Southern Utah Space Foundation, according to its news release, is to get a planetarium built in Southern Utah to complement its wonderful skies. In order to do that, the foundation provides some events, like the 5K UFO Fun Run, to help raise money and provide foundation members to interact with the community.

Those interested in helping the foundation without running the 5K are invited to make a donation to its current project, a solar telescope for daytime public events.
