St. George chapter of Utah Business Women presents Woman of the Year award

Shelly Kirk, nurse practitioner in family medicine and Director of the Red Hills Wellness Center | St. George News

ST. GEORGE—  Members of the St. George chapter of Utah Business Women were pleased to present Shelly Kirk with the Woman of the Year award at the organization’s luncheon on Tuesday. Kirk is a nurse practitioner of family medicine and Director of the Red Hills Wellness Center.

Every year, the Utah Business Women of St. George members select a woman from their midst for this esteemed honor based on her role in and dedication to the community, her success as a business owner or leader, her demonstration of excellence in her chosen career field and her mentoring of other women. Candidates must represent high character, strive to help the underserved and be a uniting force for Utah Business Women and its mission.

This year, the organization chose Kirk in recognition of her efforts to make Southern Utah a healthier place to live, work and play. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Kirk was the featured speaker at a Utah Business Women luncheon where she provided vital recent research and data on breast cancer and preventative medicine and care that reduces the risks associated with the disease.

In the October presentation entitled “Nurture vs. Nature: How to Nurture your Nature,” Kirk highlighted genomics, sharing innovative information on genetics and their impact on overall health and wellness to an audience of nearly fifty local women. Kirk said:

The study of genetics and how we can look at our own genetic predispositions to guide us in reducing our risks of cancer and other health conditions such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, diabetes, heart disease and other autoimmune disorders is truly groundbreaking.

Attendees learned how understanding their own genetics can assist them in their quest for health and how to leverage individual genetic information as a personalized guide to reduce health conditions and enhance overall wellness.

As Director of the Red Hills Wellness Center, Kirk focuses on wellness and preventative medicine. She specializes in integrative medicine, blending traditional Western medicine with natural, nutritional and holistic approaches.  It is this impactful work and her dedication to women’s health issues that made Kirk stand out as a Woman of the Year nominee.

Kirk has been actively involved with Utah Business Women since 2006, serving on the local executive board in various positions, including secretary, vice president, president-elect, and president.  Kirk was also a member of the state Utah Business Women board of directors, where she has served as correspondence secretary and nominations chair. She has been a dedicated committee member for the local branch and an advocate for women in business in Utah.
