ST. GEORGE — A head-on collision on East Riverside Drive near the intersection with Mall Drive led to an ambulance ride for a woman on Friday afternoon.
At approximately 4:47 p.m., St. George Police and St. George Fire Department personnel responded to reports of a collision between a white Chevy Cobalt and a silver Chevy Trax SUV.
Upon arrival, emergency responders found the two vehicles near the center turn lane opposite from a convenience store located at 2078 E. Riverside Drive, St. George Police Sgt. Albert Gilman said.
The Chevy Cobalt was driven by an adult male and had a single adult passenger. The Chevy SUV was driven by a woman.
“There was a white Cobalt vehicle passenger car … attempting to make a turn out of the Maverik there on Riverside Drive,” Gilman said. “There was traffic backing up from the light at Mall Drive and Riverside. The vehicles left enough of a break for him to make his way through, however, he didn’t see the vehicle that was traveling eastbound on Riverside Drive in the left turn lane that was going to make a left turn onto Mall Drive. And as he proceeded across to make his left turn, he struck that vehicle, causing the accident.”
Airbags deployed on the Chevy Cobalt, but not on the Chevy SUV, Gilman said. The driver of the Cobalt and his passenger self-transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center for minor injuries. The driver of the Chevy SUV was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center by Gold Cross Ambulance for neck and knee pain.
“He was cited for unsafe entering the roadway,” Gilman said.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene. Traffic was temporarily reduced to one lane in the eastbound lanes of Riverside Drive, and was stopped for a few minutes while a tow truck loaded the Cobalt.
St. George Police Department, St. George Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance all responded to the incident.
