Children, 12 and under, were in abundance at the ponds, learning fishing etiquette from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, getting lessons from parents and others in the proper way to fish and having a chance to win donated prizes.

“We’re having a lot of fun here today helping the kids catch some fish,” Southern Utah Anglers Association member Chad Utley said. “We’re hopeful that a lot of children that don’t otherwise have the experience to get out and fish will have that opportunity here close to home.”

“I enjoy working with the kids,” volunteer guide Joel Hall said. “I was a teacher. Lots of kids really get a kick out of the first day.”

The goal of the derby sponsors was to make sure that all children in the area have the chance to enjoy the simple joy of fishing.

The St. George Fishing Derby was co-sponsored by the Southern Utah Anglers, Dixie Wildlife Federation, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, Hurst General Store, Sportsman’s Warehouse, Virgin River Program, SCI members and the City of St. George.
