ST. GEORGE – Adverse weather conditions contributed to a single-vehicle accident on state Route 18 by Pinto Friday evening.

A mix of intermittent yet heavy rains and hail fell over much of SR-18 beginning Friday afternoon and continued into the early evening. At around 6 p.m., a northbound Toyota Tundra hit a patch of water on the road and hydroplaned around milepost 34 near the turnoff into Pinto.

The hydroplaning Toyota went into the embankment on the west side of the road, spun around and hit the embankment again, ultimately flipping onto its side, Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Taj Eldredge said.

The occupants of the Toyota, two men, were uninjured and declined medical transport by ambulance.

No citations were issued, Eldredge said. It was determined the driver was going under the posted speed limit – 65 mph in the area – when the incident occurred. It had began to hail shortly before the accident, Eldredge said, and with water already on the roadway from earlier flashes of rain and hail, weather conditions were considered a factor leading to the crash.

The Toyota Tundra was towed from the scene.

Deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the incident.
