SANTA CLARA — Fire broke out in the bedroom of a Santa Clara residence late Saturday night, but a rapid response from multiple fire crews quickly extinguished the blaze.
Just after 10 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to a residential structure fire at 1818 Wittwer Lane in Santa Clara. Upon entering the home emergency crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from one of the bedrooms, Santa Clara Fire Chief Dan Nelson said.
All occupants safely evacuated and were outside of the residence before emergency vehicles began to arrive, Nelson said.
“Due to the rapid response and a ‘good knockdown,’ the fire was confined to the room of origin,” Nelson said, “and did not spread to any other area of the house,” he said.
A “knockdown” is to reduce the flame or heat on the more vigorously burning parts of a fire edge, according to the National Park Service Fire Information.
Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze, however they remained on scene to check for hot spots or burning embers.
The occupants were able to get their pets, one dog and two cats, out of the home, Nelson said.
The entire residential block of Wittwer Lane was closed to traffic as a result of the heavy response and the number of emergency vehicles needed at the scene.
Shawn Robinson, who lives directly across the street from the residence that caught fire, went outside as the occupants were evacuating and bringing their personal belongings out of the home and placing them near the street.
Robinson said he suggested that their belongings be moved over to his yard where the items would be out of the way of emergency vehicles and less likely to become damaged.
The last items to be moved over to Robinson’s yard were two glass tanks, each containing reptiles. Damage from the fire was confined to the bedroom and no injuries were reported, Nelson said.
The cause of the fire is unknown and is under investigation.
Three engines, two ambulances and a ladder truck responded from the Santa Clara Fire Department and Ivins City Fire and Rescue, along with officers from the Santa Clara-Ivins Police Department.
