Motorcycle group tour cut short as 1 cyclist crashes

HURRICANE — A leisurely ride to Zion National Park by German tourists on rented Harley-Davidson motorcycles was delayed Wednesday evening when one rider was involved in a low speed accident that resulted in a possible broken leg.

“At about 6:21 p.m. this evening right here at 5300 West State, officers and medical personnel were dispatched to a personal injury accident,” Hurricane Police Sgt. Brandon Buell said, adding two Harley-Davidson motorcycles were involved.

One motorcycle was in front of the other one as they started out eastbound from the light at 5300 West, Buell said. For unknown reasons the lead motorcycle stopped quickly, causing the other motorcycle to clip the back end of the lead motorcycle, sending the trailing motorcycle over on its side.

“When it tipped over, that rider sustained an injury to his leg, possible fracture to his leg, and was transported to the hospital,” Buell said.

The rider was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George by paramedics from the Hurricane Fire Department. Both bikes involved had to be towed from the scene.

“Both operators were wearing helmets,” Buell said, adding that traffic was restricted to one lane eastbound for almost an hour.

The rider on the lead motorcycle caught a ride with another member of the group, which continued on its way.

Units from the Hurricane City Police Department, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Utah Highway Patrol, Utah Department of Transportation and the Hurricane Fire Department responded to the scene.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

I would have expected the report to state that the motorcyclists road to the hospital in support of their fellow motorcyclists. But it didn’t.
