SANTA CLARA – Closures are scheduled for two streets that intersect old Highway 91 beginning Monday as part of a 1.5-mile reconstruction of the highway from the west end of Santa Clara to 200 East in Ivins. The road is being widened, and curb and gutter are being installed.

  • Starting Monday, the intersection of Highway 91 and Pioneer Parkway will be closed while a concrete waterway across the intersection is formed and poured.
    • Traffic will be diverted through Rachel Drive to provide access to old Highway 91. The closure will last through Friday.
  • Starting June 13, the intersection of Rachel Drive and old Highway 91 will be closed while crews construct a waterway across the intersection.
    • Pioneer Parkway will be used as the alternate route while the intersection is closed. The closure will last until June 17.

While not related to road closures, crews started working this past Saturday on the second phase of asphalt paving from the center median to the eastern edge of the highway; work is expected to be completed by Thursday.

During this time, the trail running adjacent to the roadway will be paved as well, and traffic patterns will be shifted. The public is asked to obey posted speed limits and traffic control measures.

The project has been expanded from its original scope and is now scheduled for completion this fall. Until mid-June, traffic will flow in a one-way pattern controlled by stoplights, Monday through Friday from approximately 7 a.m to 5 p.m.

After mid-June, traffic will resume a normal pattern with an occasional return to the one-way configuration while crews complete concrete islands in the roadway median.

Other work on the project is on-going, including slope stabilization, concrete work, landscaping, utility conduits and light installation.

Drivers are encouraged to drive carefully through the construction zone, observe all traffic warnings, stay within the designated area of travel and be aware of crews working adjacent to the roadway. Fines are doubled for speeding in the construction zone

Construction began earlier this year on the west end of Santa Clara near Swiss Village where crews tore out approximately 300 feet of existing curb, gutter and sidewalk to realign the road and make room for a trail.

When the project is completed, trail users will be able to walk from the Jacob Hamblin home to Rachel Drive, where the trail will tie into an existing trail which turns north and connects to Pioneer Parkway.

Farther to the northwest on Highway 91, Washington County has agreed to contribute funds and materials to help build a bike path alongside the highway through the Shivwits Reservation.

The county will be helping the Shivwits Band of the Paiute Indian Tribe by contributing base material, asphalt, culverts and pavement markings at a cost of $41,028. The Shivwits Band will be contributing $500,000 received from a grant on the project, which is part of a master-planned trail that will extend to Gunlock.

The project in Santa Clara and Ivins is funded by Utah Department of Transportation and grants to Ivins and Santa Clara from the Dixie Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Motorists and nearby residents can find more information about the project by visiting the project web page, calling the project hotline at 800-844-3691 or emailing [email protected].
