ST. GEORGE — The Salvation Army has a new corps in St. George.
In a ceremony attended by community leaders, volunteers and members of the public Friday, The Salvation Army’s new service corps center at 803 S. Bluff St. was officially opened with a simple ribbon-cutting.
St. George Mayor Jon Pike said the Salvation Army’s mission is appropriate and helpful to all members of the community.
“What they are known for is what I think our community is known for,” Pike said of The Salvation Army, “and that is working together to accomplish difficult but important things.”
The local service corps of The Salvation Army in Utah, which includes members from a variety of organizations, has been helping those in need in the St. George area for years.
Pastor Ray Schroeder from St. George Community Church said The Salvation Army has a unique role in helping the less fortunate.
“State-funded agencies can’t lift the name of Jesus Christ when helping others. This is what is exciting to see,” Schroeder said. “The Salvation Army is not ashamed of the gospel. As Jesus said, ‘What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and lose his soul?’ By working with the Salvation Army, we can help the whole person – body and soul.”
Eira Acosta attended the grand opening and came away impressed with The Salvation Army’s efforts.
“It is a good resource for the lost and those in need of help,” he said.
The Salvation Army was founded more than 130 years ago by William Booth. In its mission statement, The Salvation Army is described as an international movement and an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church whose message is based on the Bible with a ministry motivated by the love of God. It aims to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination, the organization states.
The Salvation Army officers, who are also ordained ministers, commit their lives to serving clients in need and bringing people into a meaningful relationship with God through Christ.
The word “salvation” indicates the overall purpose of the organization — to motivate all people to embrace the salvation provided to them in Christ.
Capt. Steve Staneart, a chaplain with the Salvation Army, has coordinated a program where gas and hotel vouchers are provided to police officers who can hand them out to those in need.
Future goals for the St. George corps of The Salvation Army include opening a thrift store and providing transitional shelter.
The Salvation Army in St. George is an all-volunteer unit and utilizes 90 percent of every dollar donated in direct services for the organization’s clients. The following services are some of those provided:
- Rent assistance
- In-house drug and alcohol programs in Las Vegas; The Salvation Army will provide transportation to these programs
- Help with filling out applications for services, employment and other needs
- Addiction recovery such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous
- Gas vouchers
- Hotel and food vouchers
- Food boxes
- Transportation services
- Disaster relief
- Emergency lodging
- Summer camps
- Christmas assistance
For more information about The Salvation Army in St. George, visit the service center at 803 S. Bluff St. or telephone 435-275-4975. The center is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday of each week. The corps also holds worship services every Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

This is awesome! Lisa was at the north Las Vegas rehab center (ARC) where my son went to rehab. This is a great program, I’m glad to see it here. I hope many addicts here take advantage of the program and I hope the courts will order addicts to Salvation Army adult rehabilitation center. It’s a tough program. It’s strict. It will rip you to your core, And it has a lot of love. I’m so excited for this town to have the Salvation Army here. My son, Justin (aka JSmoove) is one of their success stories.
Yeah when I found out the S.A was looking to get a place in St George. I was all for it it’s a great organization and they have a lot to offer

I have to agree with lba on this! I’m very happy to see a local Salvation Army center here! It has always kind of irritated me to see the Salvation Army Santa Claus at all the stores here, without, (as far as I knew,) donations staying here in Dixie!
Can’t wait for the thrift store part!
