ST. GEORGE — Dixie Air Force junior ROTC registration opens for the summer “Leadership Orientation Camp” July 11-15. The camp is open to students entering ninth through 12th grade at any Washington County School District School interested in the program.

For the first time, students from both Dixie High School’s program and Pine View High School’s new Air Force junior ROTC unit will be attending the camp together,  retired Col. Glenn R. Whicker, who oversees the junior ROTC program, said.

Fundraising from the booster club helps subsidize the costs of the camp to the cadets, bringing down the price for the 5-day camp to $75. The program includes a trip to Camp Williams near Lehi, Utah, with rappelling, a ropes course, water survival skills, an obstacle course and a leadership reaction course.

The two top performing cadets will each earn an orientation flight over St. George in a small Cessna 172 aircraft.

To sign up, visit the Dixie JROTC website, where students can find camp itinerary, registration forms, a packing list,  and permission forms.

The leadership camp program accepts 40 cadets each year, Whicker said. Preferably 20 new cadets and 20 cadets who can serve as mentors.

The last day to register is July 8.

Summer camp provides cadets with opportunities to develop teamwork, leadership, physical fitness, and other important skills they can utilize during their youth and later in life as well.
