ST. GEORGE – Runners of all types and abilities will gather at the St. James chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1095 E. St. James Lane in St. George Friday at 10 p.m. to participate in the ninth running of the Chelsi’s Run 5K.
The annual nighttime 5K was created to honor the memory of Chelsi Dawn Petersen who died in a car accident in 2008. Friday will mark what would have been Chelsi’s 29th birthday.

Money raised from the run goes to the Chelsi Petersen Memorial Scholarship Fund which partners with the Washington County School District to provide scholarships to high school students.
Last year enough money was raised to provide 12, $1,000 scholarships to students from Dixie, Snow Canyon, Pine View and Desert Hills high schools, said Debbie Parker, one of the race’s founders.
The 3.1-mile run is an untimed loop course in the St. James neighborhood of St. George. It is a fun run with loud music, glow lights and lots of people gathered for a great cause, Parker said.
“The race honors a wonderful young woman whose life was taken at such a young age,” Parker said. “And it provides a great opportunity for local students to receive a scholarship to go to college.”
Registration is open and can be done online through Wednesday. Runners can also print out the registration form and take it to the downtown Pizza Factory location, 2 W. St. George Blvd. in St. George. Same day registration will be available at the race start (late entrants are not guaranteed a T-shirt).
Race fees are $15 per person and $50 for a family of four in advance; or $20 per person and $60 for a family of four if you register on the same day as the race.
