ST. GEORGE — An early morning collision between an SUV and a pedestrian on Red Hills Parkway sent a 43-year-old St. George man to the hospital with head injuries Thursday.

The woman driving the SUV was heading west on Red Hills Parkway at 4:55 a.m. She had just entered a curve in the roadway west of Industrial Road when the incident occurred, according to a post from the St. George Police Department Facebook page.

The sun had not risen yet and the area where the incident took place was dark. The driver saw a man walking in her lane and swerved to avoid striking him, but was unable to avoid a collision, according to the post.

The man was struck by the corner of the SUV and thrown to the ground, sustaining a head injury. He was transported by ambulance to Dixie Regional Medical Center. The woman was uninjured.

Traffic was closed in the westbound lanes of Red Hills Parkway between 1000 East and Industrial Road for approximately two hours while detectives with the St. George Police Department Investigations Division and members of the  Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and gathered evidence.

Anytime an accident occurs that might involve serious injuries that may result in a fatality, or when fatal injuries are sustained, members of these two teams are called to conduct an investigation in an effort to fully document all aspects of the incident and circumstances preceding it. That investigation is ongoing, the St. George Police Department said in its Facebook post.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
