WASHINGTON CITY – A vehicle crashed through a fence at Riverside Elementary School on the first day of school Thursday morning.
The single-vehicle crash happened a little before 10 a.m., Washington City Police spokesman Ed Kantor said, when a Honda SUV was northbound on Harvest Lane near 2500 South.
“For an unknown reason, the vehicle swerved left, struck the chain link fence there, went through the fence and struck some rocks,” Kantor said.
The Honda came to rest inside the fence of the school grounds.
The fence was left standing with only minor damage.
“It went underneath, actually, the fence kind of just stretched over the top of it,” he said.
The adult male driver told police the crash was caused by mechanical problems and that he had been having steering problems.
No one witnessed the crash, there were no injuries and no citations were issued, Kantor said, and speed did not appear to be a factor. The Honda was damaged and had to be towed from the scene.
While no children were present at the time of the incident, Washington City Police spokesman Ed Kantor said it was a good reminder to drivers to be aware of schools, school zones, children and other pedestrians as the school year gets underway.
“We always remind people not to allow any distractions while you’re operating the vehicle,” Kantor said. “There’s no indication of that here, but it’s always a good time to remind people.”
“Obviously, school’s in session now, so anytime we’re in a school zone or near a school, we need to be particularly mindful of kids coming and going,” he added.
During the summer months, it’s easy for drivers to get used to not seeing children around schools.
Kantor stressed motorists should use caution in school zones and anywhere there might be pedestrians.
