Film Fanatics: ‘Pete’s Dragon,’ ‘Sausage Party’; alert to parents

REVIEW – This weekend’s new releases deal with the belief – or lack thereof – in a higher power, but both films address this theme in a wildly different manner.

In David Lowery’s remake of Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon,” a boy survives in the harsh wilderness for six years through the aid of a fantastical companion. Once Pete makes it back to civilization, he has to decide whether he wants to stay put or return to his magical friend in the woods. Does this family film soar or does it come in for a rough landing?

With the not-so-family-friendly CG animated feature, “Sausage Party,” Seth Rogen leads an all-star comedic voice cast in this irreverent tale of a store full of happy-go-lucky grocery items whose dreams of being purchased and taken to “the great beyond” are squashed after learning the shocking truth behind their existence. Does “Sausage Party” have more to offer than crude humor?
