ST. GEORGE — Two scores just before halftime and a great defensive second half helped the Dixie Flyers come away with a 42-28 win at Canyon View Friday night.

dixie-logocanyon-view-logo“We made a few adjustments at halftime and the second half was much better,” said Dixie defensive end Tyson Fisher.

The Flyers trailed nearly the entire first half and were behind 20-14 before scoring back-to-back TDs in the waning moments of the second quarter.

Quarterback Jacob Barben gave Dixie its first lead with 1:20 to go before halftime when he found a streaking Hobbs Nyberg with a perfect touch pass along the left sideline. The 44-yard strike, along with Keenan Miles’s extra point, made it 21-20.

Dixie used its timeouts and got the ball back with 36 seconds left at its own 39-yard line. Two quick Barben completions to Josh Topham, one of 8 yards and the other for a 53-yard touchdown, pushed Dixie’s lead to 28-20 at half. The second score came on a Barben scramble and Topham crossed the goal line with just four seconds left in the first half.

“We made a lot of mistakes tonight, but we did some good things, especially in the first half,” Barben said. “It feels good to get a win, but we’re not satisfied yet.”

As he had early in the game, Nyberg scored on an option pitch to make it 35-20 midway through the third quarter. The Flyers put the game in their back pocket with a 7-yard TD scramble by Barben early in the fourth quarter to make it 42-20.

Canyon View added a late TD by Stockton Rigby to close to within 42-28, but could get no closer.

Barben had quite the game for Dixie, rushing for two scores and passing for two more. Nyberg scored three times and Dixie compiled more than 400 yards of offense.

It’s the first win of the season for the Flyers (1-3), who open region play next week with a rivalry game at Pine View. The game at Panther Stadium will be the fourth of five straight road games for Dixie (DHS plays at Cedar Sept. 23).

Isaiah Shearer rushed for more than 100 yards for the Falcons, including a scintillating 86-yard score in the first quarter. Canyon View, 0-4, also begins region play next week with a 3A South game at Manti.
