Troy Robb was hired by Mesquite Fire and Rescue in April 2008, having just retired from a distinguished career in the United States Navy. During his naval career, he earned his fire science degree and emergency medical technician-advanced certification while also earning many other highly regarded naval certifications.

Robb was instrumental in the selection and implementation of new self-contained breathing apparatus units, when the department’s became outdated. He spent many hours evaluating demonstration equipment, working in conjunction with the fire department administration to select the best equipment.

Robb then set up the technician training classes for the selected equipment to certify fire department personnel in the maintenance and repair of the system.

“Robb is a professional Firefighter in every sense of the word,” Mesquite Fire and Rescue stated in a news release this week. “He worked with people on many different levels to get our department into the safest and most dependable SCBA equipment offered in the fire service today.”

Mesquite Fire and Rescue’s 2016 Safety Officer Award recipients are Firefighter/Critical Care Paramedics Jayson Andrus and Karen Hughes.

Andrus and Hughes tackled the challenge of becoming critical care paramedics, a goal that normally takes two-five years. The duo achieved this status in six months.

Both Andrus and Hughes have proven themselves in several notable rescues, including a landscaper that had nearly severed his arm in an industrial accident and a patient with an elevated heart rate. Both rescues were successful; in the case of the landscaper, his arm was saved and is expected to return to full use.

“In a department that is filled with outstanding performers, it gives us great pleasure to nominate Jayson and Karen as this year’s recipients,” Mesquite Fire and Rescue stated in its news release. “They will be the first to tell you that they belong to an already exceptional organization. However, their actions this year have raised the bar in a department that already operates at a very high level.”
