IVINS –An abundance of cats at the Ivins Animal Shelter and Adoption Center has prompted a “Fall in Love” adoption event set for Saturday.

fias-october-2016-flyer“We have 43 cats in our small shelter,” Linda Elwell, president of Friends of Ivins Animal Shelter, said. “We have to get cats adopted.”

“And that’s why we’re waiving the adoption fee for all kittens and cats during this month-long adoption promotion.”

The usual $25 adoption fee will be waived for all kittens and cats now through Oct. 31 to approved adopters; adoption fees for dogs will be reduced from $50 to $25.

“We just need community support to help us find forever homes for these cats,” Elwell said.

All cats offered for adoption are spayed or neutered except kittens that are too young for the procedures. Adopters of very young kittens will be asked to sign an agreement to have the procedure done when the animals are old enough. Cats are also current on their vaccinations.

Friends of Ivins Animal Shelter is responsible for all of the financial needs of the homeless pets in the shelter, Elwell said, including health care, spaying and neutering, vaccinations, food, litter, advertising, adoption promotions and anything that is connected with the no-kill status.

“So that expense does not reflect back onto the taxpayers in those two cities,” she said.

Ivins Animal Shelter serves both Santa Clara and Ivins and has been a no-kill shelter since 2006.

After Santa Clara contracted with Ivins for police services in 2012, Friends of Ivins Animal Shelter began working with the Santa Clara City Council to extend the no-kill policy to that city. Santa Clara passed a new no-kill ordinance in 2015, Elwell said.

The adoption event is held in partnership with Best Friends Animal Shelter of Kanab. Pictures and descriptions of pets that are available for adoption can be found on Petfinder.com and the Friends of Ivins Animal Shelter Facebook page.
