CEDAR CITY — In memory of former music department member Shane Summers, the faculty of Southern Utah University’s Department of Music will perform Monday in a recital titled “Soirée” at the new Southern Utah Museum of Art.
This stirring concert will feature many faculty performers and the various instruments they have mastered. Included in the performances will be Carol Ann Modesitt, soprano; Virginia Stitt, English horn; Lawrence Johnson, tenor; Christian Bohnenstengel, piano; Lynn Vartan, chimes; Adam Lambert, trumpet; Krystal McCoy, soprano; and Canès Nicolas, violin.
Two of the department’s collaborative pianists – Tracey Bradshaw and Rebecca Curtis – will accompany soloists, as well as perform piano solos and duets.
Musical numbers have been selected to highlight many influential composers. These include Claude Debussy, Ottorino Respighi, Johann Sebastian Bach, Astor Piazolla, Arthur Jarvinen and Southern Utah University’s very own resident composer and department chairman, Keith Bradshaw.
“This year’s faculty recital will be of special note,” Lawrence Johnson, associate professor of music, said. “We are dedicating this performance to the memory of our colleague and dear friend, Shane Summers, whom we suddenly lost this past August. There will be music specifically written for and also dedicated to Shane, as well as a short video presentation.”
Students, faculty, and community members can take this time to remember Summers’ life and the deep impact that he had on the university and community.
