Officials find body of 47-year-old woman at Grand Canyon

ST. GEORGE — Park rangers responding to a report of a missing person at Grand Canyon National Park Monday located the body of a 47-year-old woman. Officials are investigating the death as a possible suicide.

At approximately 12:30 a.m. Monday, the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a call alerting rangers to an overdue woman at the park, according to a statement issued Tuesday by the National Park Service.

Responding park rangers located the woman’s vehicle near Twin Overlooks on Desert View Drive Monday afternoon, park officials said. After searching the area, rangers found the body of a female below the rim of the canyon.

On Tuesday, rangers recovered the body and confirmed the identity of the deceased woman as Michelle Russell, of Tempe, Arizona.

An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner.
