Docutah descends on Southern Utah with over 60 films from 15 countries; special events listing

ST. GEORGE — The Docutah International Documentary Film Festival kicks off Monday evening and continues through Sept. 9, bringing audiences a chance to see over 6o documentary films from 15 countries.

In addition to the films, guests will have the opportunity to enjoy several special events and screenings throughout the week.

Tickets can be purchased online and at the Dixie State University ticket office located at the Cox Performing Arts Center, 350 S. 700 East in St. George.

Schedule of events

Monday, Sept. 4 | Gala, 6:30 p.m.; film screening, 8 p.m. | Gala dinner and screening of “Tuacahn: Miracle in Padre Canyon” | Admission: $20-$200 | Location: Tuacahn Center for the Arts, 1100 Tuacahn Drive, Ivins.

  • To kick off its eighth season, Docutah will host a gala dinner event at Tuacahn in advance of the evening’s world premiere of the documentary film “Tuacahn: Miracle in Padre Canyon.” Tickets for the Gala dinner are $200 and include dinner, tickets for the screening and a DVD copy of the film. Tickets for the film screening start at $20. Tickets can be purchased online.

Tuesday, Sept. 5, 6:30 p.m. | Free screening of “Far Western” and concert | Admission: Free | Location: Town Square Park, 50 S. Main St., St. George.

  • This is a free community screening of the story of a Japanese band besotted with American Country Western music. Before the screening, local musicians Eric Dodge and Sam Payne will be giving a concert and will be joined by Yoshi Sakamoto, the Japanese country music singer from the film.

Wednesday, Sept. 6, 7 p.m. | Free screening of sections of “The Vietnam War” | Admission: Free | Location: Cox Auditorium, DSU campus, 350 S. 700 East, St. George.

  • The Docutah International Documentary Film Festival is proud to include a special free screening of exclusive clips from “The Vietnam War,” the new 10-part documentary film from award-winning filmmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. Premiering on PBS stations on Sept. 17, this groundbreaking documentary series tells the epic story of one of the most divisive and consequential events in American history.

Friday, Sept. 8, 7:15 p.m. | Free screening of “Expedition Alaska” | Admission: Free | Location: Kenneth N. Gardner Student Center, DSU campus, 225 S. 700 East, St. George.

  • The public is invited to a free screening of “Expedition Alaska” being held by the DSU Student Association and sponsored by Docutah. The film tells the story of 20 teams who brave the Alaskan wilderness for the competition of a lifetime.

Saturday, Sept. 9, 7 p.m. | Docutah Awards Celebration | Admission: $20 for general public and Red and White Festival Pass holders; price included for Gold Festival Pass holders | Location: DSU Film Studios on the Ridge Top Complex, South Donlee Drive, St. George.

  • This year, Docutah will present the Raven awards at a gala celebration at the newly opened DSU Film Studios. Guests will enjoy refreshments and entertainment as awards are presented to filmmakers. Tickets are $20 for general public and Red and White Festival Pass holders. Admission to the event is included for Gold Festival Pass holders. Tickets for the awards celebration can be purchased online.

“Doctalk”

Doctalk offers guests a chance to get up close and personal with filmmakers as they discuss the ins and outs of making documentary films. Attendees will be able to ask questions and receive insight on the filmmaking process and the business of making documentaries.

Talks will take place starting Tuesday and going through Sept. 8 at 3 p.m. in the Sears Gallery in the Eccles Fine Arts Center, 225 S. 700 East in St. George. All Doctalks are free and open to the public.
