ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Multiple people were shot Thursday at a newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland, with a witness saying a single gunman fired into the newsroom.

A reporter at The Capital Gazette tweeted that a single individual shot multiple people. Phil Davis, who covers business and politics for the newspaper, tweeted that the gunman shot through the glass door to the office and opened fire on multiple employees.

He added, “There is nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you’re under your desk and then hear the gunman reload.”

Anne Arundel County Police Department spokesman Marc Limansky said officers were searching the building where the shooting was reported. He said the situation is “active and ongoing.”

On TV reports, people could be seen leaving the building with their hands up, as police officers urged them to depart through a parking lot and officers converged on the building.

A gas station employee near the shooting site described a flood of police activity in the area as he sat tight inside his still-open workplace.

In a phone interview, Carlos Wallace, who works at a station just down the street from the newspaper’s offices, estimated that “dozens of dozens” of law enforcement vehicles and ambulances had raced toward the scene with sirens blaring.

“The road is blocked off real good. It’s like dozens of dozens of emergency vehicles, police cars of all types, explosive vehicles, battering ram vehicles, all kinds of stuff,” Wallace said.

Lt. Ryan Frashure, another spokesman for Anne Arundel County police, said on WJLA that officers are “doing everything to get people out safe.” He said they must look for other dangers, such as bombs and other shooters.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said it was responding to reports of the shooting.

The newspaper is part of Capital Gazette Communications, which also publishes the Maryland Gazette and CapitalGazette.com. It is part of the Baltimore Sun Media Group.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan issued a statement saying he was “absolutely devastated” at the tragedy. Officials said President Donald Trump had been briefed on it. White House spokeswoman Lindsay Waters told reporters, “our thoughts and prayers are with all that are affected.”

Sad day, yet again. Spin is already happening before details are out.

  • IPFreely June 28, 2018 at 5:52 pm

So you are hiding under your desk hearing people get shot and don’t assist even when he has to reload….

    • bikeandfish June 28, 2018 at 8:23 pm

Really, that is your take away right now? That is some cold-blooded BS. Unless you have the skills to mitigate the risk its best to abide by the “no more victims” approach. According to gun folks it only take a couple seconds to reload; most of us can’t do anything meaningfully in that time period without exposing ourselves to increased risk of death.

The police were there with roughly a minute and better prepared to help, which they did.

and in the real world it’s wannabe heroes that get shot first, esp those without a gun. IP is gonna be another john, I can tell.

Too bad the world is full of pansies like you

Really surprised some crazy Trump supporter hasn’t done this to MSNBC or CNN. Better security I guess.

    • IPFreely June 29, 2018 at 12:06 pm

Look up the facts about all the shooters this far.. all democrats

      • No Filter June 29, 2018 at 2:06 pm

Better double check your facts there buddy, most recent shooters are not affiliated with any political party or there is no conclusive evidence. This has been debunked so many times I am not going to waste my time telling you how fake this news is regarding the shooters. My point was not that a certain political party would shoot up a news company, but rather that Trump’s followers could very likely take his words the wrong way and take matters into their own hands. When you constantly scream to your followers that the news is fake and out to get Trump, it won’t take long for some idiot to to get the stupid idea in their head to attack the news stations that don’t support Trump. This is why Trump needs to stop trying to silence the press. No president in our entire history has attacked the press the way this guy does other than dictators like Putin and Kim jong-Un

No Filter is correct about party affiliation. There are no partisan connections to these shooters but the internet myth persists.

        • bikeandfish July 1, 2018 at 4:54 pm

Obama had the worst press rating in recent history before Trump came along. We slipped pretty far under him. To be fair though, Trump has taken it to an entirely different level and shouldn’t be left off the hook.
