ST. GEORGE — A Kanab resident was killed and another transported to the hospital with serious injuries after the driver rolled his vehicle.
According to police, the driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee, 66-year-old Richard Cothern and his 58-year-old passenger, Herman Brown, were eastbound on Arizona state Route 389 near mile marker 10 when Cothern drifted off of the edge of the roadway and attempted to correct his steering.
Cothern lost control of the vehicle, and it began to roll.
Cothern was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle during the accident. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Herman was wearing his seat belt, but sustained serious injuries. He was extracted from the vehicle by the Colorado City Fire Department and taken by Life Flight helicopter to Dixie Regional Medical Center.
Police are waiting for a toxicology report from the Mohave County Medical Examiners office to determine if Cothern was under the influence and if that factored into the accident.
This report is based on statements from police and may not contain the full scope of findings.
