OPINION — Words cannot express the disappointment I felt for this community after reading the related article and seeing the photo which was generated – with obvious pride – by Hurricane High School students.

It begs the question, where did this graphic hatred come from? Was it from the community? Do they see it on social media? It certainly isn’t the first confederate flag I’ve seen in Hurricane.

I wonder how the parents feel when they see what their kids have done. Research shows that racism, for the most part, is learned, i.e., it starts at home. Are parents teaching this hatred to their children?

It is the school’s function to educate and to speak out against this behavior. The response from the police department, “Hurricane PD does not condone this type of message but we are also aware of individuals right to free speech” sounds a lot like a certain response after Charlottesville.

Is this the kind of community we want to live in? To be proud of? I certainly hope not.
