Driver dies after two-vehicle collision in Enoch

ENOCH — A 61-year-old man died after being transported via ambulance from the scene of a two-vehicle collision in Enoch Friday afternoon.

The crash occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Midvalley Road and state Route 130, also known as the Minersville Highway. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find a badly damaged Chevrolet Suburban upside down in the roadway and a dark green Chrysler minivan with heavy front-end damage.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Jesse Williams said the male driver of the Chevrolet had been westbound on Midvalley Road when he crossed the intersection in front of the Chrysler minivan, which was being driven by an adult female and was heading south on SR-130.

“(The Chevrolet) pulled out in front of the vehicle that was traveling south and was struck on the passenger’s side, causing it to overturn,” Williams said.

Responders were able to free the injured driver from the wreckage of the overturned Suburban, after which the man was taken to Cedar City Hospital by ambulance.

“He was talking to staff and emergency personnel on scene, but then he said he was having some trouble breathing, so they transported him,” Williams said.

Although Williams initially reported that investigators were unsure of the driver’s condition, about an hour later he informed Cedar City News by telephone that the man had died. 

The deceased driver was later identified by UHP officials as Mark Dotson, 61, of Milford.

The cause and other circumstances of the crash are still under investigation, authorities said.

The woman driving the minivan had four children in the vehicle with her, but none of the minivan’s occupants reported any injuries.

UHP reported the minivan’s occupants were all properly restrained but that the Suburban driver had not been wearing his seat belt.

Traffic was rerouted from the intersection for more than one hour while police investigated and cleared the scene. In addition to UHP troopers and Gold Cross Ambulance personnel, other responders included Enoch Police officers, Iron County Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters from the Cedar City Fire Department.

The intersection near the Family Dollar store in Enoch has been the site of multiple collisions over the years, including at least two other serious crashes since last fall. On Halloween, two women were injured when their SUV was struck by a semitractor-trailer. Then, in January, a man was injured in a similar T-bone collision reportedly caused by another driver who failed to stop at the stop sign.
