A fire crew was dispatched to the entrance of the White Dome Nature Preserve and trailhead around 4:50 p.m. where they encountered a Toyota Highlander SUV that had caught fire.

St. George Fire Capt. Dan Cazier said the driver told him some of the warning lights on the dashboard had begun to light up and the Toyota began to lose power. Smoke appeared from under the hood as the driver pulled the vehicle into the White Dome Nature Preserve’s parking area just off River Road south of the Fort Pierce Industrial Park.

After he pulled off the road, flames appeared from under the SUV’s hood while the fire spread from the engine block to the interior of the vehicle.

“It happened pretty quick,” Cazier said and it was extinguished by firefighters upon arrival.

While the SUV is a loss, the driver did not appear to have been harmed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Cazier said.

This report is based on statements from police or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
