FEATURE — Fire Lake Park, otherwise known as Ivins Reservoir, boasts some of the best vistas in the area and even though it is not very well known, it is quickly becoming a popular spot among locals and families.
In this episode of “Blooming in the Desert,” Caitlin Maurine Skillings and Brittney Lelli Callister head out with the little ones to one of their favorite places to share some tips on how to make your trip to the reservoir easy, safe and full of fun.

“We love spending our summer days up here with our kids – so beautiful – so many fun things to do up here,” Callister said. “A great way to spend your summer days with your kids.”
Situated on the Shivwits Band of Paiutes reservation next to the Kayenta Homes development on old Highway 91, Washington County’s oldest reservoir has gone through a complete overhaul in recent years. Originally used for irrigation, Ivins Mayor Chris Hart envisioned the area would make a perfect spot for a more developed recreation site that everyone could enjoy.
Working in partnership with the city, the Shivwits tribe and Kayenta homeowners, they have cleared out tons of debris, created new walking pathways and brought in 7,000 cubic yards of sand for a designated swimming area, creating a small oasis in the west desert.
“Water days can take a little more preparation than your average hike but it’s so worth it on those brutal summer days when your kids are bored and you just need something to do,” Callister said.
It is a great place for swimmers but also kayaks, canoes and paddle boarders will love it because no motorized craft are allowed at the park.
Remember to wear sunscreen, bring a beach mat, drink plenty of water, make sure to clean up all your trash, be brave, try new things and above all, remember to have fun. And the best part, it’s free.
