WASHINGTON CITY — As the population in Washington City and the surrounding area grows, so do the strains on current traffic infrastructure and the need to improve it. One of these spots is the segment of Washington Dam Road In Washington City between 1900 East and the intersection with the Southern Parkway where roadwork is set to start Monday
“With the growth and the traffic demand, we need to widen it from the little, narrow two-lane road, to a large capacity road,” Mike Shaw, Washington City public works director, said earlier this week.
Work on the targeted segment of Washington Dam Road will last approximately three months and run the city around $5 million, Shaw said.
Improvements to the roadway include widening it to five lanes while also replacing and up-sizing existing water lines to meet future needs, according to the project’s page on the Washington City website.
The installation of a sewer trunkline and improved storm drainage infrastructure will also take place during the construction period.
“The road will be open, but there will be some temporary closures (and) a lot of flagging of people there, so there will be a lot of delays on that road,” Shaw said, and recommended motorists to take an alternate route over that part of Washington Dam Road.
The roadway near the Southern Parkway is a mix of farmland and industrial businesses, and it is frequently traveled by large vehicles in addition to the increased traffic flow from the Southern Parkway.
