SUU Director of Athletics Debbie Corum made the announcement about Warren’s departure via a written statement Monday.

“Coach Warren has been a cherished member of this institution and community for the last 14 years,” Corum said in the statement. “He has elevated the football program in many ways and has positively impacted the lives of hundreds of young men.”

Corum said that Warren has “always putting the program ahead of his own desires” but that he had made the decision to “step aside and make room for another coach to lead the team.”

“I support him in this decision,” she added. “Demario has laid a strong foundation, and we will begin work immediately to find the right person to continue building a successful program as we enter the Western Athletic Conference.”

A nationwide search for Southern Utah’s new head football coach will begin immediately, the news release added.

The end of the recently completed 2021 season marked the conclusion of Warren’s sixth year as head coach of the Thunderbirds and his 13th year with the program overall. Warren leaves SUU with an overall record of 21-42. Warren led the T-Birds to a Big Sky Conference championship in 2017.

This season, the T-Birds finished with an overall record of 1-10, including 0-8 in Big Sky Conference play.

The next time Southern Utah football takes the field at Eccles Coliseum, it will do so as a member of the Western Athletic Conference, with the school set to join the league in July 2022.
