ST. GEORGE — Winning 76% of the vote, Nate Brooksby was selected to be the next Washington County sheriff during a special election held Tuesday night in St. George. He succeeds Sheriff Cory Pulsipher who recently announced he was retiring from the position due to health reasons.
The choice was between Brooksby and Jared Redfearn who applied to fill the sheriff’s position, which Pulsipher will officially step down from in December. Brooksby will serve for the remainder of Pulsipher’s term.
Both Brooksby and Redfearn have served over 20 years with the Sheriff’s Office. Brooksby has served as the undersheriff since Pulsipher announced his retirement.
Pulsipher, who was serving his third term as the county sheriff, announced in October he was retiring. The decision was prompted by a cancer diagnosis and the debilitating health conditions he has experienced since, he said in a recent interview with St. George News.
As Pulsipher’s resignation occurred before his third term as the sheriff concluded, it was left to the leadership of the county’s Republican Party to appoint a replacement who will be the county sheriff until the next countywide election for the position is held.
