Cedar High swim teams take 1st place at Canyon View Invitational

CEDAR CITY — The Cedar High School girls and boys swim teams each took first place overall at a weekend swim meet at Southern Utah University.

The Canyon View Invitational attracted a total of 15 schools on Friday and Saturday.

In addition to Canyon View, which now competes in the 3A classification, the event featured five teams from 4A’s Region 10, namely Cedar, Crimson Cliffs, Snow Canyon, Dixie and Pine View, in addition to several teams from the northern and central parts of the state.

Following are short recaps highlighting top finishes by athletes from Southern Utah high schools. For complete individual results, click here. For team results and scores, see bottom of story.

Cedar High’s Aspen Simper won the 50-yard freestyle event, a race that attracted more than 130 swimmers. She posted a time of 25.67 seconds, while teammate Hannah Edwards took second in 26.68. Adrina Daley of Crimson Cliffs placed third.

Simper also won the 100 back in a time of 1:02.12, just one second off the boys’ top time at the meet.

Snow Canyon’s Kylie Barber also won both of her individual races, taking first in the 200 free with a time of 2:02.08 and first in the 100 fly with a time of 1:02.09.

Kiley Reynolds of Canyon View won the 100 breast in a time of 1:09.37. She also finished second in the 200 individual medley, while teammate Addison Taylor placed third. Taylor also took third in the 100 fly.

Cedar’s Olivia Price and Abby Stratton placed a respective second and third in the 500 free. Price also took third in the 200 free.

In the 100 free, which attracted 93 entrants, Cedar’s Natalie Moses was the top finisher from Southern Utah, placing fourth with a time of 1:01.90.

Canyon View’s Kylie Reynolds won the 200 IM and the 100 breast, and Snow Canyon’s Kylie Barber won the 200 free and the 100 fly.

The Snow Canyon girls won both the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay, while Cedar won the 400 free relay and took third and second in the other two.

On the boys side of the meet, Canyon View senior Max Cannon won the 100 breast in a time of 1:00.28. He also placed third in the 50 free, an event won by sophomore Josh Walker of Crimson Cliffs. Walker’s winning time in the 50 free was 22.54, while Cannon finished in 23.11.

Cedar’s Tobler Dotson won the 200 IM in a time of 2:04.45, with teammate Tanner Dodds placing second in the event and Snow Canyon’s Daxton Green taking third.

Dotson also finished second to Cannon in the 100 breast, with Walker placing third in that event.

Dodds, meanwhile, won the 500 free in a time of 5:16.24, with teammate Justin Granado placing second with a time of 5:29.95.

Canyon View’s Jacob Grimshaw won the 200 free in a time of 1:57.39, with Derek Hall of Crimson Cliffs taking third in that event. Hall also finished third in the 100 back, while Cedar’s Caleb Simmerman placed second in that race with a time of 1:01.15.

Ryen Bailey of Canyon View placed second in the 100 fly with a time of 58.06, while Beaver High’s Roberto Gonzales placed third.

Kurt Morgan of Canyon View was the top Southern Utah finisher in the 100 free, placing fifth with a time of 53.72.

The Canyon View boys won the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay, while Cedar’s boys won the 400 free relay. Crimson Cliffs and Snow Canyon each posted top-three relay finishes.
