Greg Sanders, the school district’s Careers and Technical Education director, said as many as 850 11th-graders in Iron County were in attendance, including the entire junior classes from Cedar, Canyon View and Parowan high schools, plus Launch High School and the SUU Success Academy.

Sanders said the district’s annual career fair, now in its eighth year, used to be for both juniors and seniors but now it’s just for 11th-graders.

“Instead of doing it for the seniors who are on their way out of high school, we can make a difference with them as juniors, and get them in the courses they need during their senior year,” he said.

Students went around to various different presentations of their choosing, spending 15 minutes at each, for a total of five rotations. They turned in their participation cards at the end for a chance to win prizes.

Karen Johnson, the district’s community outreach coordinator, said approximately three dozen presenters participated.

“SUU had eight or 10 of their departments here,” Johnson said. “We also had police, firefighters, military, manufacturing, engineering, dentistry and insurance.”

Other career fields represented at the event included cosmetology, automotive technology, aviation, real estate, culinary arts, nutrition, agriculture, law practice, hospitality, accounting, physical therapy and business administration.

During the presentations, students were heard asking various questions, including how much schooling is needed for a particular job, what its typical salary range is and the likelihood of available work in that field.
