ST. GEORGE – Snow Canyon continued to roll through pre-season with a 34-3 win over North Sanpete.
The Warriors got off to a sluggish start, but battled back thanks to a 200-yard, four touchdown performance from running back Mitch Phillips.
“Mitch was amazing tonight,” Snow Canyon coach Jay Graft said. “He really came through and helped us out. He played really, really well.”
The score was, unbelievably, 0-0 at halftime, leading Graft to believe his team wasn’t mentally prepared for the night’s game. “We came out a little flat,” he said. “We didn’t prepare mentally. North Sanpete came out strong and did some good things.
“We’ve got a lot of kids who haven’t played much and a lot of kids who aren’t used to winning big games like we have the past two weeks.”
Graft calmed his team down and then enjoyed a much better second half, thanks in no small part to Phillips.
First, Phillips rushed five yards for the first score of the game.
North Sanpete scored a field goal next, but then turned the ball over twice resulting in two additional Warrior touchdowns – one by Phillips who ran for 78 yards on the play, the other by Cade Heward midway through the third quarter.
Phillips then scored two more touchdowns, including an unbelievable 82-yard run in the fourth quarter that put the Warriors up big.
“We talked all week about how we need to come out focused and play hard in each game,” Graft said. “We’re 3-1 come out of pre-season, which is what we wanted. But we have to be prepared for region each and every night regardless of who we’re playing.”
Snow Canyon will next face Canyon View on their home turf.
