Herbert Snow Bentley

Bentley, Herbert 2(January 4, 1927 – February 17, 2014)

Herbert Snow Bentley, age 87, went home to see his sweetheart on Monday, Feb. 17, 2014. He was born Jan. 4, 1927 in St. George, Utah, to Herbert Roy and Leonora Snow Bentley. Herb joined the Navy at the age of 17 with his high school pal Bob Covington. After returning from the Navy, Herb met Clora Colleen Turner, of Washington, Utah, at the College Cove, where she was working. They were married on Sept. 15, 1949, in the St. George Temple.

He had a special love for people, nature and music. He was always friendly and outgoing, and he especially valued the associations he made through his church service: as a ward clerk for many years in the old St. George Fifth and Ninth Wards, as a member of the bishopric of a Dixie College ward, on three missions to the local Historical Sites and on a Member Locator mission, during many years spent as the St. George East Stake Clerk, and serving in the Temple. He also made many cherished associations in his different occupations: in the old Bank of St. George, later Zion’s Bank, where he was an officer; in the local Post Office; in the Old Dixie Hospital; and as the Washington County Recorder.

He loved being outdoors and was involved in many civic organizations such as the American Legion, President of the Dixie Wildlife Federation, National Rifle Association, taught Hunter Safety, member of Chamber of Commerce and President of the Little League Baseball and Football where he co-sponsored Punt, Pass and Kick Competitions. He attended countless ballgames, concerts and programs in support of his kids and grandkids. He always had a garden, fruit trees and grapevines in his yard, and he loved sharing the fruits of his labors with friends and neighbors.

Dad has been lost without Mom, who passed away in 2008, and has longed to join her. They are survived by six children: Kathleen Cox Baber, Kenneth (Kathy) Bentley, and Doug (Deonn) Bentley, all of St. George, Utah; Marilyn Sorensen Mower of Provo, Utah; Alan (Mary) Bentley, of Alpine, Utah; James (Emilie) Bentley, of Salt Lake City, Utah; 28 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren (plus twins on the way); and one great-great grandchild. Herb is survived by his brother Marion J. (Deanna) Bentley as well as many close and beloved nieces, nephews and extended family. Herb was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Alice (Frank) Holland, Erma (Bill) Sandberg, Mildred (Darwin) Dailey, and Helen Nisson Jolley (Darrell and Wilf); granddaughter Tina Valyn Cox Roberts and great-grandson Cort Roy Roberts.

The family wishes to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the wonderful people who have helped Dad on his journey home, especially Mom’s sister, Yvonne Kendall, who has stood in her place as his confidant and guide for six years, with Lena and Jerry Turner, his  F.H.E. gang, extended family, friends, neighbors, ward members, and medical  personnel, Dr. Tom Jones and Robin Johnson, home health and care facility staff,  Ambrea Hardy Curtis of CNS and the girl’s from the Beehive Home on River Road.
