HURRICANE — A Hurricane man was arrested Tuesday for lewdness in front of a child after he was caught urinating near a school in front of children.
Officers responded to a suspicious person report at a Hurricane school, where students ranging from kindergarten to 8th grade attend, according to a probable cause statement written by Hurricane City Police Officer Ken Thompson in support of the arrest.
“Two witnesses observed a male who had his hand down his pants and appeared to be masturbating,” Thompson wrote in the statement.
The witnesses said the man then urinated while facing the school in front of approximately 21 students who were outside at the time, and in front of several classroom windows with a clear view of the street where the suspect was standing.
The man was identified as 29-year-old Stephen Ray Vaughn.
“When I made contact with (Vaughn), I asked what he was doing at the school,” Thompson said. “(Vaughn) said he was urinating.”
Thompson said Vaughn became angry and said he didn’t want to talk to him about what happened, according to the statement.
Vaughn was arrested and booked into the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility.
He was charged with a class A misdemeanor for lewdness involving a child and a class C misdemeanor for public urination.
His bail for release pending trial stands at $2,290, and his arraignment is scheduled for Thursday.
Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
