ST. GEORGE Because one of the factors in a domestic violence survivor’s decision on whether to stay with their abuser or leave is financial dependence, the Allstate Foundation recently awarded  the Dove Center a $20,000 grant to teach domestic violence survivors financial literacy skills to assist in their recovery.

“We are very much about personal empowerment; and with so many survivors feeling financially paralyzed, we would be doing a disservice by not providing access to this critical material,” Dove’s Executive Director, Lindsey Boyer said. “Thanks to The Allstate Foundation’s support, Dove Center can help survivors rebuild or establish financial security in their lives.”

Devastation can result when a victim of domestic violence has to leave a home, income, and economic benefits to escape abuse, Dove board member and Allstate agency owner Shonie Christensen said.

“Financial factors are the strongest predictors in a survivor’s decision to stay, leave, or return to an abusive relationship,” Christensen said, adding that the grant will help survivors of domestic abuse recover from the loss of that economic security.

Organizations across the country are participating in this educational program with the help of the Allstate Foundation. The focus of the program is on building financial independence and empowering youth.

Services are available for any person in Washington County who is a victim of domestic abuse. The Dove Center can be reached 24 hours a day at (435) 628-0458.
