“I’m not in my right state of mind,” is what Elvis Wade Adley, 36, of Hurricane, told a St. George Police officer Saturday morning, according to to a probable cause statement.

The responding officer arrived in the area of 974 E. 100 South by dorms on the Dixie State campus around 10:20 a.m. where he encountered Adley.

“Elvis was only wearing a black colored garbage bag,” the responding officer wrote in the statement. “Elvis’ garbage bag was covering his penis and buttock.”

Adley appeared to be fidgety and was pacing back and forth and seemed delusional. He appeared to be experiencing the effects of methamphetamine, the officer wrote. Adley was then placed in handcuffs based on the officer’s observations.

The officer went on to interview multiple witnesses who saw Adley around the area between 7 a.m. and 10:20 a.m. One witness told police he had seen Adley exiting a building “butt naked” and shake what looked to be a rug. He then saw Adley walk across the campus, still naked.

Adley was seen again by others again around 9:25 a.m. where he was sitting on a bench near the dorms, this time wearing a pair of pants and one shoe. Additional witnesses told police they saw Adley attempt to break into the dorms and using screwdrivers in an attempt to pry some doors open.

According to the witnesses, he managed to break into the dorm’s storage room and took garbage bags from the room.

The responding officer found pry marks on two doors and three screwdrivers. Estimated damage to the doors is around $50.

Given his state of dress, or more specifically lack thereof, Adley had no identification on him at the time of his arrest. However, the officer was familiar with the man through previous encounters and was able to verify his identity via police records.

The officer made Adley aware of his Miranda rights, according to the statement. Adley said he understood his rights and proceeded to tell the officer, “I’m not in my right mind” due to having smoked methamphetamine two days prior. He also said he hadn’t eaten or slept during that time.

Adley admitted to trying to get into the rooms with the screwdrivers and taking the trash bags, the officer wrote.

Elvis blamed his actions on the fact he was suffering the side effects of methamphetamine,” the officer wrote.

Adley was taken to the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility on charges of alleged felony burglary and various misdemeanors for theft, criminal mischief, intoxication and lewdness.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
