ST. GEORGE – Dixie State University’s Sears Art Museum Gallery opens a new exhibit Monday featuring pieces completed by Utah artist Gaell Lindstrom over his seven-decade career as a globetrotter, mentor, painter, potter and photographer.
The retrospective exhibition, “Lindstrom,” is a free art show open to the public that will be on display through Jan. 13. Exhibit hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday except holidays.
“He is best known for his watercolors, which were often chacterized by dark, moody colors,” an August 2009 article in Gaell Lindstrom’s memoriam by Artists of Utah states. “He traveled widely, including Mexico, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Spain, Morocco, and Italy; and everywhere he went he painted the visual world around him.”
Gaell Lindstrom is a well-known Utah State University art professor and award-winning artist who mastered a variety of mediums. Of those, his photography, paintings, ceramics and drawings will be represented in the upcoming exhibit.
“Gaell Lindstrom left behind a legacy of art, and consequently many fine artists have been influenced by his teaching,” Kathy Cieslewicz, curator of the Sears Art Museum Gallery, said. “We are pleased to present a collection of his earliest work as a young person to his later grand works, showing his progress as an artist.”
Gaell Lindstrom first taught high school then college in Cedar City before moving on to teach at Utah State University. Later, he and his wife Marilyn lived in Southern Utah after retirement.
“They spent many years in an adobe house east of Hurricane where the artist enjoyed painting the magnificent view of Zion Canyon outside his window,” the Artists of Utah memoriam article states.
In the university’s news release, Cieslewicz thanked Gaell Lindstrom’s son Braden Lindstrom, a Dixie State assistant professor, and his family and friends who were willing to share their prized possessions for gallery visitors to enjoy.
A reception will be held Dec. 2 from 7-8:30 p.m. to celebrate the opening of “Lindstrom” at the gallery in the Dolores Doré Eccles Fine Arts Center on the Dixie State campus.
The Sears Art Museum Gallery features six exhibits each year. Offering a variety of art styles from traditional to contemporary, the gallery exists for the enjoyment and education of Dixie State University students and the community. For more information, visit the Sears Art Museum Gallery website.
