Thunder boys, Tiger girls run away with top honors at SC Invitational

ST. GEORGE — The Desert Hills boys track team was downright dominant Thursday evening, making the Snow Canyon Invitational its own personal showcase by nearly doubling the nearest competitor. Hurricane’s girls team also won the team competition, edging out the Dixie girls for the top honors.

For the boys, the Thunder had gold medals in eight of the 16 events in the meet, including a clean sweep in all five field events. Blake Kvarfordt continues his phenomenal high school career and was impressive once again, winning the shot put event by more than seven feet over silver medalist Jordan Ence of Hurricane and taking the discus by more than 22 feet, also over Ence.

Desert Hills’ Lau Tumanuvao won the other throwing event, chucking the javelin more than 155 feet and beating out teammate Austin Drew. Tumanuvao is a sophomore and Drew is a junior.

The two jumping events were dominated by DH junior Chandler Swaney, who cleared 6-foot-9 to win by nine inches in the high jump, then hurtled 22-feet-6.25-inches to win the long jump, beating teammate Caleb Whitney by more than two feet.

The three other gold medalists for the DH boys were Braden Reber in the 200-meters with a time of 22.88, John McPhie in the 1,600-meters with a time of 4:32.01 and the Thunder 4×100 Relay team, which sprinted to a time of 43.65.

Dixie and Pine View had three boys gold medalists each. For the Flyers, Brayden Riding won the 400-meters in 52.87, Ike Urquhart won the 800 in 1:58.77 and the Dixie 4×400 Relay team, with Riding, James Otto, Jaden Harrison and Jacob Beers, won with a time of 3:35.11.

For the Panthers, Triston Duran took the glamour event, sprinting to victory in the 100-meters with a time of 11.58, while Taylor Abel won the longest race, the 3,200-meters, with a time of 9:57.56. PV also won the medley relay with the team of Abel, Wayne Staheli, Colton Miller and Nick Hill, finishing with a time of 3:46.14.

The two other boys medalists were Hurricane’s Tyson Long in the 110-hurdles (15.51) and Snow Canyon’s Weston Esplin in the 300-hurdles (41.31).

On the girls side, it was a much closer team competition, with the Tigers pulling it out on the strength of a couple of good relay runs and some tough competitors in the field events.

Hurricane’s girls got gold in a total of four events. Sydney Ballard took the javelin with a throw of 107-feet and teammate Dominique Cooke, just a freshman, won the shot put at 33-9.5. The Lady Tigers also took the 4×400 with the team of Alyssa Lambert, Shania Hurst, Brianne Cahoon and Lacey Prince as well as the medley relay with Hurst, Prince, Stormi Stratton and Malary Reid.

Dixie, which finished second in team points on the girls side at the event, also came away with four gold medals. Sarah Barney won the high jump for the Flyers, while Elizabeth Durrant took the 3,200-meters, Starlee Woodbury won the 100-meters and the team of Woodbury, Sara Ludlow, Kaylee Carter, and Kailee Brady won the 4×100 Relay.

Ogden didn’t have a full team, but three OHS Tigers took gold as Maranda Garrett won the 1,600, Holland Lythgoe won the 800 and Hannah Allred won the 3,200.

Snow Canyon had two golds, with Jenny Stewart winning the 200 and Kenedi Maycock taking the long jump.

Pine View’s Kaytlin Dowdell won the discus, Desert Hills’ Olivia Leavitt won the 100-hurdles and Cedar’s Aimee Bryson took the 400-meters.
